BEHIND THE LINES

Laurel Kornhiser, PhD

Hooked by the wonders of the first chapter book she read as a child, Laurel Kornhiser has dedicated her life to the power of storytelling. Through children’s stories, philosophical poems, and full-length books, both fiction and nonfiction, she crafts works of nuance and breadth, finding a challenge and a thrill in the infinite possible combinations of words and the worlds they conjure.

Her fascination with the art of writing led her to earn a bachelor’s degree in English from Boston University, a master’s from Boston College, and a Ph.D.in American and British literature from Northeastern University. A perpetual student, she not only has taken and led creative writing workshops, she completed Stanford University’s Novel Writing Certificate Program in 2023. Laurel’s loyalty to her passion has led to careers as a magazine and book editor, freelance journalist, and long-time college professor. After a career of shining light on the works of others and sharing the wonders of literature and magic of wordsmithing, it is now time for the light to shine on her. Welcome to the beginning of Laurel Kornhiser’s next chapter…

IN THE WORKS

Penelope

What started as a curiosity about a somewhat minor figure from The Odyssey turned into the tale of a woman who was sneaking out in search of answers about her husband’s fate, joining a mysterious priestess for a secret ceremony in the woods, journeying to a hidden cove where she has a mind-altering encounter with Poseidon, and barely surviving her trip to the Underworld, which convinces her her husband is dead

When not braving the elements and her society’s censure if discovered, Penelope is navigating a home life of increasingly aggressive suitors, disloyal maids, and keeping her deepest secrets hidden even from her favored weaving friends.
